'Empowering the Grassroots through Agents of Change' The economic downturn caused by the pandemic has led to over 100,000 households driven into poverty in Hong Kong as indicated in a study published by the Hong Kong Council of Social Service (HKCSS). With deep understanding of poverty experience based on childhood grassroot upbringing, Mr Wayne Chau founded a social enterprise Agent of Change, which has served over 600,000 poor people. Wayne’s effort is recognized by society, winning him numerous awards including the Hong Kong Volunteer Award, Hong Kong Youth Services Award, and the Hong Kong Spirit Ambassador. In the closing plenary, Mr Chau will share his dedicated work over the past years in empowering the grassroots through education, along with his advocacy of promoting Finnish education across Asia. During the pandemic, Mr Chau leveraged with 60 social leaders globally to support PPE sourcing and delivery for humanity. The story and challenges behind connecting Hong Kong with the world in the fight against poverty will also be shared in the plenary, illuminating the pathway for everyone of us to be an agent of change. BiographyMr Wayne Chau is a leading social entrepreneur and education innovator in Hong Kong. Born and raised at the grassroots level, he used to live in subdivided units and even once sleep on the street. He deeply understood the sufferings faced by the poor and thus established Agent of Change, a social enterprise that has served over 600,000 poor people. Wayne’s effort is recognized by society, winning him numerous awards including the Hong Kong Volunteer Award, Hong Kong Youth Services Award, and the Hong Kong Spirit Ambassador. Wayne has been appointed by Hong Kong Government to be a member of the Commission on Poverty, Community Care Fund Task Force and SIE Fund, and several government committees. He is appointed the first-ever Honorary Ambassador of the University of Turku and the University of Lapland for his contribution to promoting Finnish education in Asia. He was selected for UNLEASH Innovation Lab 2018 and led his team to be world number 2 in the SDG4 track. He is a member of Facebook’s Global Youth Advisory Committee. He is actively involved in various global projects. During the pandemic, he leveraged with 60 social leaders globally to support PPE sourcing and delivery for humanity.
